Movies in the Cinestar Erlangen in English Created: 21.04.2014 13:44

Since I like to watch movies in their original version, if that version is in a language I can understand, I was pleased to learn that the Cinestar in Erlangen has now started to show "OV" movies, which usually means they're shown in english. However, they seem to want to keep this a secret: You have no way of ever finding out about that from their homepage unless you know what you're looking for. They do not list it as a special offer, in contrast to e.g. the turkish movies they occassionally show in turkish. Instead you have to know that they show these only on Sunday afternoon, and then by looking at the program for Sunday, you'll find one that has a "OV" tab (next to the 2D or 3D tab). They also list these only less than a week in advance.
It really makes me wonder if they are actively trying to discourage people from seing these showings.

For reference, these are the cinemas that I'm aware of showing OV movies as of April 2014 in the Erlangen/Nuernberg area:
  • Cinestar Erlangen
Right in the city center of Erlangen. Shows one movie per week in english, on Sunday evenings.
  • Roxy Renaissance Cinema
This is actually the only proper foreign language cinema in the area, showing almost exclusively movies in english. As much as I like the atmosphere there, the big downside if you live in Erlangen is that it is in the south of Nuernberg ("Gartenstadt"), which is a rather long drive by car and an even longer trip (45 minutes+) by public transport.
  • Cinecitta
Giant multiplex in the center of Nuernberg, that also shows quite a few english movies, but almost all of them only in 3D whether you like it or not. Also tends to be a bit expensive.
  • Manhattan Erlangen
In the city center of Erlangen. Shows some OV movies, not only in english, but also french movies in french and so on. However they always show them "OmU", "Original mit Untertiteln", that means with german subtitles - something that I find way too annoying to ever watch.
  • Babylon Fuerth
Shows one OV movie every two weeks, but like the Manhattan, always with german subtitles.

Sadly, the Roxy Renaissance Cinema closed permanently in September 2020, because funds ran out due to Corona.
